HELLO, I’m Richard Hamer and I’m a freelance social media and digital PR consultant based near Leeds, West Yorkshire; or to be more precise Otley.
I help clients understand what social media can bring to their business, be that brand awareness, customer engagement, customer service or income generation and then develop, define and implement a plan for them.
I’ve worked in social media since 1999 when I joined the Press Association, Britain’s national news agency, where I worked in the new media division, which eventually became Ananova.com, the world’s first virtual newsreader. This was sold to Orange at the height of the dotcom boom, and it became its multimedia arm.
While at Orange I was a night editor for nearly three years where I oversaw world events such as 9/11 and the invasions of Iran and Afghanistan.
Orange helped pioneer online news and social media before it was even called social media through its partnership with Nokia and its 7110 phone, and I was there when it was all happening.
Before moving online I’d been a newspaper journalist in far flung places such as Newcastle and Slough, and I hold a post-graduate diploma from the Journalism Centre, Sheffield. I also have a degree in urban development from Leeds Polytechnic, now Leeds Beckett University.
When not working I can usually be found running, cycling or hiking – anything that involves being outdoors.
